Loving by Giving’s mission is to change people’s lives practically, by bringing immediate relief to people living in poverty and encouraging sustainability.
Our aim is to make the biggest positive difference to the world we possibly can, with the resources available to us. Therefore, we get involved in areas that will yield a high social return on investment. As a result, we choose to work in four specific areas where the impact is relatively high, namely water, food, sanitation and homelessness. Although not limited to these four areas, we believe that by focussing on them, lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world could be significantly improved.
As an organisation with a Christian ethos, we believe that faith is practical, and that love should be put into action. Therefore, our vision is not only to relieve poverty, but also inspire communities of Christ-followers all over the world to put their love into action by using the resources, skills or time already available to them, to help those in need. In other words, we believe that changed lives, change lives. Consequently, we provide online resources that are designed to encourage, empower and inspire individuals to become more like Christ, support each other in community and change the world.
Loving by Giving started with two families who were touched by all the poverty and need they saw in the world, especially in their home country, South Africa. They were living in the United Kingdom and realised that they were so privileged and blessed with such abundance, that they often took it for granted, without thinking of those who were less fortunate than them. In 1 John 3:17 it says: “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?”
They decided to do something about the situation and collected some un-used clothing. Instead of taking extra baggage on their next trip to South Africa, they packed clothes for people in need and delivered it to a local charity. The smiles on the people’s faces and the realisation that even the smallest contribution can make a real difference to someone’s life got them hooked on the idea. Back in the UK they told their friends about their vision of using what they already had available to bless those in need. Since then the movement has grown rapidly with many people giving clothes and toys for those living in poverty in different countries in the world and more and more people are inspired to put their love into action by getting involved with the need of others around them.
In the Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren makes a profound statement: “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.” This statement is at the heart of what we believe: that we should show God’s love in practical ways to those in need by giving of our own possessions, skills and resources and thus make a positive difference in the world.
